Introduction to Dudh Kunda Trek
The Dudh Kunda lies high in the mountains of the Southern Solukhumbhu directly under the Numbulr Himal Range and has several lakes with milky water. It lies off the beaten Treks and is perfect for nature lovers. It is a mixture of teahouse and camping trek and can be done easily in 8-10 days from Kathmandu or even in shorter time changing slightly the route. The trek goes into the Sherpalands and gives a great insight of their lifestyle. This is also an ideal Trek for people living in the Valley. Dudh Kunda, a holy lake surrounded by mountainous terrain and believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrimage tour and for adventure trekkers. Dudh Kunda situated in the lap of Mt. Numbur, locally known as Shorong Yul Lha, Protector of Solu region. Dudh Kunda (which literally means milky lake) is believed to be a holy lake and the locals believe that taking a dip in the holy waters will have the wishes granted also where you will enjoy and see panoramic Himalayan views of Everest, Number, and Everest Himalaya range also Green forest with Rhododendron flowers, pine tree, wild animals ,birds such as Mountain Thars, Bears, Leopard, Jackal, Pheasant and Milky lake. Devotees believe that taking a dip in its holy cold water would absolve them from all their sins as well as bless childless families with children. During full-moon nights in August, pilgrims and Jhankris (Shaman Priests) hold a week-long celebration here. On the trail to Dudh Kunda, you’ll pass through Kaku, Basa, Taksindu and Beni, where you’ll see some breathtaking panoramic views of mountain peaks, sparkling waterfalls and tranquil lakes that will entice you to stop. As you continue on, you’ll pass through dense forests of rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal, which are in bloom from March to May. Also in the fall (September to December) when the weather is temperate and the skies are clear you can see these wild flowers in full bloom. Views of flora and fauna as well as a variety of wildlife will catch your attention but not slow you down. However, the hospitality of the locals is one of the most heart-warming experiences one can come across in this area and they may have you stop to chat or entice you with something delicious to eat. This area has many diverse ethnic groups living here such as Sherpas, Khaling Rais, Tamangs, Magars, and Gurungs so interacting with them makes your trip even fuller than your stomach. Dudh kunda trekking is admired trekking trail lies in Solu Khumbu region though less crowded then the nearest in Khumbu Himal range. Dudh Kunda (Milky Lake) is lies at the foot of Number Himal, Dudh Kunda Trekking trail taking you through dense forests of rhododendron and a variety of wildlife. The hospitality of the locals is one of the most heart warming experiences of the Solu area with long experience. In every August there is an influx of devotees of Hindus and Buddhist who come to perform cleansing ritual at the lake. At other time you are unlikely to meet anyone on this rarely traveled trail. Authentic Sherpa villages and Sherpas culture, rhododendron and magnolia forest, Buddhist Monastery to a series of beautiful lakes of which Dudh Kunda is the most revered.
Itinerary in details
Day 1: Arriving at international airport meeting with SFT staff, transfer to hotel, welcome drink. Checking equipment, short afternoon tour in Thamel for shopping trekking gear. Overnight in Hotel.
Day 2: Full day sightseeing tour in Kathmandu with Tour Guide by private car. Overnight in Hotel.
Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Phaplu and trek to Ringmo through blooming (spring) rhododendron forests and green meadows. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 4 and 5: Ringmo to Sarsar Beni (3800m) half way we make our first camp and at day 5 we climb up the steep way to Sasar Beni. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 6: We climb up to Dudh Kundh (4561m) enjoy the lake and the nice views at Numbur (6959m) and Karyalung (6681m), two peaks of the Numbur Himal. After Lunch we return to our camp for dinner and night in Sarsar Beni. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 7: Sarsar Beni — climbing to a pass over Pare Dande enjoying wonderful mountainviews and down to Junbesi, where we sleep in a nice Lodge/Overnight at tented camp.
Day 8: From Junbesi we walk down to Beni and climb then up to the airfield of Phaplu. Overnight at tented camp.
Day 9: After breakfast we fly back to Kathmandu where the town staff brings us back to our hotel.
Day 10: Shopping and/or sightseeing in the valley, as you wish.
Day 11: After breakfast transfer to international airport. SFT service ends here.
This trek can be prolonged as follows:
-Insert 1 day visiting Chiwong monastery from Phaplu: if you do this, at the
arriving day in Phaplu you will hike to a viewpoint in the afternoon.
-Insert 1 day for easy-slow trekking between Sarsar Beni and Junbesi.
-Add 1 Day in Junbesi for visiting the wonderful monastery up in the valley.
