The Great Himalayan Trail Alpine Way Hard GHT (Helambhu-Langtang Section)
Section 4: From Barabise to Syabrubesi via Tilman’s Pass 5320m, Camping Trek 26 Days
This trek crossing the Tilman’s Pass after visiting the Bhairav Kund and five sacred lakes of Panch Pokhari and the extremely remote Jugal Himal, home of the blue sheep and the red panda. The Langtang Himalayas are within easy reach of Kathmandu. But they rival any alpine area on the planet for staggering natural beauty. The Langtang region remains one of Nepal's hidden treasures with far less tourist traffic than the Everest or Annapurna regions. Jugal Himal or "chain of peaks" is situated to the northeast of Kathmandu. It includes the summits Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Madiya (6257m) and Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m). The trail follows a ridge to Bhairav Kund, a holy lake at 3500 meters. We then make a circuit around the head of the Balephi Khola Valley to Panch Pokhari ("five lakes") at 3600 meters, a seldom-visited pilgrimage site. This trek is a true adventure. Expect significant elevation gain on narrow trails. Most villages are without guest houses. The trek takes us past the rocky peaks of Kanshurum, Urkinmang and Ganchenpo after passing the high snowy Tilman’s Pass. A long time ago in Kerung, Tibet, an old Lama and his wife, Dorjee and Lakpa, had an ox they loved, but it ran away along the banks of the upper Trisuli, past Rasuwa, down to where the Langtang Khola joins the river and up into the Langtang valley. The couple followed the ox's spirit trail left as magic marks in the snow. They chased the ox past the holy ground of Kyangjing Gompa towards the mountain of Langtang Ri and on a large flat rock that sat in the khola, killed it out of sheer frustration. Today the rock is covered in red moss and lichen which grew out of the animal's blood. The couple was so upset at their stupidity that they changed form and their spirits flew into the mountains to become the twin peaks of Dorjee Lakpa. This can be a tough trek in a remote and wild part of Langtang National Park.
