Days: 23 / Difficulty: 4 of 5 (Strenuous)
Upper Mustang is a very unique area north of the Annapurna-circuit and within north of the main Himalayan range. Because of that it is cut of from the summer-monsoons of the himalayan Southface and is therefore quite a dry, desertlike landscape. Geographically and culturally this ancient Buddhist kingdom belongs already to the Tibetan plateau. Strictly off limits for tourism for many centuries, it is one of the treasuries of original Tibetan culture in a landscape, which looks very similar to the Tibetan highlands. Many old and important monasteries can be found here in tibetan-style villages with their traditional Chortens. In the sixties and seventies of the last century this ‘Lost Kingdom’ created some irritations in the relationship between Nepal and China, because it was one of the strongholds of the Tibetan resistance against the Chinese occupation. This trek, although mainly in high attitude, is without any peculiar difficulty and allows us to calmly explore this unique Buddhist region, which is a spiritual and retreat site of significant importance. We will also try to arrange appointments with spiritual teachers (Lamas) belonging to the various schools of Tibetan Buddhism. There are not many places left in the Himalayas, which are like an open window to original ancient Tibet. One can feel here transported back into a spiritual enviroment, which is already lost in the Tibetan mainland. Because of his exceptional spiritual atmosphere we have choosen this trek for our Trekking and Meditation program.
If you need Meditation instruction you can get this at day 2 a short introduction to Shamata Practice and then you meditate on your own on the trek.
