YUMTSO LAKE
Having crossed the Tsangpo at Chaksam, we turn right onto a smaller unmetalled road that soon begins the long, winding ascent of the Kamba-La Pass. The first view you have from the top of the mountain pass at 4,794m. is the breathtakingly beautiful, deep blue-green water of Yumtso Lake. We have a fine view of the whole lake from the flight window as we fly from or to Kathmandu. The road descends to the shore of the lake and follows its winding course to the dismal little town of Nangartse (154 km or 96 mile from Lhasa). Pilgrims take a short kora around rocky Cairns and prayer flags and undertake ritual washing, drink water from the deep slices of the nearby cliff as a means of purification of sins.
