Simikot-Hilsa Limi Circuit Camping Trek, 20 Days Fixed Departure!
The Limi Valley is one of the most remote and remarkable valleys in the Nepal Himalaya in Humla district of Karnali zone of north wertern Nepal. The valley is full of Tibetan landscapes, with dry and desert like terrain surrounded by very high mountains. Most of the inhabitants of region are Tibetan origin and their culture, tradition and lifestyle is highly influenced by the Tibetans. Most communities of people here are of Nyinba, Bynsi, Limipa, Khampa etc living in Trans Himalayan style stone huts plastered with mud, the main occupation of the people here is animal herding. The Longest river in Nepal Karnali flows through the valley and is rich in wide variety of rare vegetation and animals like wild yaks, barking deer, blue sheep, musk deer, wild horses, Himalayan black bear, spotted snow leopard etc. Entrance to this valley for outsiders has been opened only recently since 2002 and since many trekking route has opened to the valley. Trekking here is fairly difficult and is not much crowded unlike other trek route in Nepal. The Simikot Limi valley trek takes to the remote location Limi valley where we can explore the beauty of western geographical region and culture and tradition of Nepal. The journey takes us to the isolate and very beautiful valley of Limi via Simikot , this area is untouched by urbanization and has preserved the beauty of nature in its natural self, the valley of Limi is also referred to as Shangri-la The trek takes us to the thick evergreen forest of Karnali gorge inhabited by rare and endangered species of animals and vegetation, the amazing mountain ranges such as Nalakandad and Saipal is also covered by the trek The valley of Limi has a special geographical called rain shadow which means trekking is possible in this region even in the monsoon season during the month of June, July, August while the rest of the country is soaked in rain. This trek starts from Simikot which is situated at an elevation of 2910 meters and climbs up to Nara La pass (4530 meters) and make a loop back to Simikot via Limi valley through scenic Nyalu La (4950m). This tough but rewarding trek offers the opportunity to meet the friendly villagers of upper Humla. Visit the monasteries that are 400-1000 years old and experience the unique culture of the past still in practice. Added to this is scenery of pine-forested Karnali gorge and beautiful Saipal and Nalakankad mountain range. The area untouched by modern changes and believed to be the present form of mythical Shangri-la. Limi valley is the only one west east isolated valley extending from one Border Himalayan pass (Hilsa) to another pass (Chang La) between Nepal and Tibet. The longest river of Nepal, Humla Karnali enters Nepal border at Hilsa where the valley starts from West Side. Limi valley is very beautiful, photogenic, wide and wonderful. Mound Gyuokharka (5000m) provides the wonderful views of the Nepalese Himalayas like Saipal (7031m), Byas Rishi, Api, Kanjirowa, Kanti, Gorakh Himalayas and Tibetan Himalayas like Mt. Kailash and Gorlamdanda and tranquil Mansarovar lake, hundreds of mounds like breast, meandering rivers and rivulets. This region is famous for rare flora and fauna. It can be seen the marmot, wolf, wild yak, blue sheep, wild horse (kyang), barking deer, musk deer, hare, Himalayan black bear and occasionally the snow leopard in this exotic region. Indigenous Tibetan cultured people are settled there and they have their particular Tibetan language, tradition and culture. Very big and beautiful villages like Haljee and Gombayok are located in the wide patches of Limi Khola. The source of income of the people is only the livestock and occasionally little a bit trade. Some people make and sell the wooden pots like tea bowl, yogurt pot, jewelry box etc. Because of the poor economic condition, there is the Polyandry marriage system in the society. Grazing cattle in the pasturelands adds the more beauty in the valley and this valley is newly opened for the trekkers. To protect the fragile ecosystem of the high country, the government of Nepal issues the limited number of permits with special fee for that hidden valley. Entering the rarely visited and mystic Limi Valley seems like stepping back in time. Due to the isolated location, the villages are very untouched and pure. Century old Buddhist traditions, interwoven with shamanistic influences, are still an important part of daily life. The trekking route follows the ancient salt trading and pilgrimage route to the border of Nepal and China, crossing the Nara La pass. From the border town of Hilsa you turn northeast towards Limi Valley. During this trek you walk through a variety of stunning landscapes, ranging from green pastures with below the wild flowing river to barren rocks, reminding to the Tibetan plateau. Due to its remote location, Humla is still an “off the beaten trek destination”.
