KATHMANDU VALLEY

The Kathmandu valley in Nepal

The capital of Nepal is together with all the places and all the surroundings a treasure of medieval himalayan art and culture. The whole valley belongs to the Unesco world cultural heritage.
Not only the roofs, similar to pagodas of the palaces, temples and houses, or the richness of exquisitely crafted carvings, put out the charm(hard to be caught in words) of the Katmandu valley, also not the luxuriance of the golden treasures in the temples. It is the whole atmosphere which fascinates, and it's the people who form this atmosphere and always have formed, even before the first capital was founded in the year 723.
The inhabitants of the valley have documented their 'religiousness' always in overwhelmingly beautiful constructions. The holiest site for the Buddhists is Swayambunath, the oldest pagoda, originated already in the 4th century B.C. In the temples of Pashupatinath are praying the Hindus. Everywhere in the whole valley one bumps into small, honoured temples and shrines; the religion owns in the everyday life of Nepal a very high value.
The oldest preserved worldly constructions, are from the 17th century. They are to be found in residence areas like Katmandu, Patan and as well in Bhadgaun(Bhaktapur). These three places, were all capitals of single partial empires in the course of history, but by now they have grown together(almost) to a metropolis.
