Swiss Nepal Family Trekking Swiss Nepal Family Trekking Swiss Nepal Family Trekking Swiss Nepal Family Trekking Swiss Nepal Family Trekking
Chitwan(the heart of the jungle) National Park is situated 90 kilometres Southwest of Kathmandu, covering an area of 932 sq.km, it is the first national park of the country. Established in 1973 to preserve a unique ecosystem and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Such a diverse combination of nature provides a perfect habitat for wildlife.

CHITWAN NATIONAL PARK
Location: South-West of Kathmandu
Subtropical inner Terrai, lowlands of South Central Nepal
Geographic coordinates: 28 00 N, 84 00 E
Total Area: 932 sq km
Map references: Nepal
Elevation: 150 m above sea level
Climate: varies from warm summers to mild winters
Vegetation: Sal(Shorea robusta) forest (70%), Grassland (20%), Riverine forest (7%), Chirpine (3%)
Mammals: More than 43 species
Birds: More than 450 species

In the exclusive remoteness of the Chitwan National Park, the visitors have ample opportunities to experience wildlife at its best, as the topography of riverine forests interspersed with large tracts of grassland together with plenty of water within proximity, makes it a perfect setting for wildlife to thrive. One of the best ways to view the flora and fauna of Chitwan is by taking a safari ride on an elephant, as it enables you to penetrate deep into the jungle through tall grasslands. However, there are many other exciting ways to take on the adventure like; jungle walks, jungle drive, bird watching, boat rides to seek out both the marsh mugger and gharial crocodiles and to observe wildlife from one of our watch towers.

What to bring?

Chitwan is located in the sub-tropical lowlands of Nepal and days are generally warm, requiring only light clothing. During winter(early November to February), mornings and evenings are cool, requiring a woollen sweater or a warm jacket. You may bring along a sun hat and glasses, swim-wear, binoculars, flashlight, sunscreen and insect repellent, which will come handy for outdoor activities. We recommend neutral coloured clothing and comfortable walking shoes are essential.

All kind of species!

The grassland is formed of a diverse and complex community with over 50 plant species. The saccharum species, often called Elephant grass, can reach 8m. in height. The shorter grasses such as imperata are useful for roof thatching.
There are more than 43 mammal species in Chitwan National Park. The park is especially famous for protection of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros, whose estimated population is 400 till today. The park also secures populations of other endangered species such as tigers, gaurs (largest of all bovines), wild elephants, four-horned antelopes, striped hyenas, pangolins(anteater family), gangetic dolphins, gharial crocodiles, monitor lizards and pythons. Other animals found in the park include four different types of deer: Sambar, Chital(spotted deer), Hog and the Barking deer(Muntjac). Sloth bears, common leopards, ratels(honey badger), palm civets, linsang, jakals, langurs and rhesus monkeys also inhabit the park.
There are over 450 species of birds in the park, among which the endangered birds are; the Bengal floucan, giant hornbell, lesser floucan, black stork and white stork. A few of the commonly seen birds are peafowl, red jungle fowl, parakeets and different species of egrets, herons, kingfisher, flycatchers and woodpeckers. The best time for bird watching is March and December.
In addition, over 45 different species of reptiles and amphibian including marsh muggers, crocodiles, cobras and various species of frogs and tortoises can be found in the park.
Chitwan National Park is also actively engaged in the scientific study of several species of wild flora and fauna.

How to get there?

By surface;
A pleasant five hours drive by car or bus on the Kathmandu - Narayanghat highway follows the Trishuli river offering you a continually changing landscape from the mountains of the Himalayas to the plains of the Terrai.

By raft:
One of the most exciting way to travel to the park is to raft down the Trishuli River. For two or more days you can float down the river experiencing its numerous rapid and seeing a variety of village life, flora and fauna along its banks.

20 min. flight will bring you from Kathmandu to Bharatpur where you will be met by our staff and transfer to the resort.

Where else can you experience the thrill of passing through rapids, paddle waves, play sand volley-ball, relax on your own private sand beach accompanied by sounds of nature, enjoy delicious food cooked for you, and swap stories sitting by the candles on the sand all in the same day? And more over, you can experience all this together with your family!
